Coffee-to-go made sustainable

By Lucy Wood

Carbon Credentials is proud to be the headline sponsor of EAUC’s 2019 Annual Conference. The conference provides a brilliant opportunity for sustainability professionals from the higher and further education sector to come together and share best practice advice, celebrate achievements and discuss the work that still needs to be done.

One of the great initiatives at this year’s conference is the requirement for delegates to bring their own Ecoffee Cup or buy one at the conference to use – no disposable coffee cups will be available.

This is a simple but effective engagement technique. By making the greener choice the easier choice, delegates will be far more likely to commit to using a Ecoffee Cup during the conference and afterwards.

Ecoffee Cup: The Vision

Ecoffee Cup aim to encourage coffee lovers to be more sustainable simply by reusing their coffee cups.

Through altering this small and for many of us, daily, behaviour, Ecoffee Cup hope to turn people away from using disposable coffee cups, in-turn reducing the amount of waste produced.

  • billion coffee cups are thrown away each year in the UK.
  • 1% of disposable cups will be recycled.
  • From the University of Leeds selling reusable coffee cups, 100,000 disposable cups have been diverted from landfill.

The story

David, founder of Ecoffee, started his journey in 2014 after reading that coffee cups can’t be recycled. He set up the #stopthe100billion campaign to coincide with the launch of the cup, which refers to the amount of disposable coffee cups thrown away globally every year.

“There really is no use for single-use” – David McLagan, Founder of Ecoffee Cup.

Ecoffee Cups are made from the fibre of naturally organic bamboo which happens to be one of the most sustainable crops in the world. The coffee cups are also fully biodegradable.

They now offer a range of sizes, colours and designs suited to anyone on-the-go in need of their caffeine fix.

The success

Ecoffee Cup sold 4 million cups in 2018 and have seen an average 200% growth in turnover every year since launching.

These figures show there is no doubt that society is becoming more engaged with the ways in which they can carry out greener behaviours in their everyday activities.
