Birkbeck, along with other Bloomsbury Partners Colleges, instructed Carbon Credentials to review environmental management practices and processes in order to ensure continuous improvement. A big part of this process was reviewing and updating the current CMP to find a feasible route to meet 2020 targets.
A number of issues with the old CMP were found:
- Misalignment between objectives and targets defined in the CMP, and goals in other strategic plans to grow the estate and maximise occupancy rates
- No clear pathway to achieving carbon reduction targets, and insufficient understanding of required investment
- CMP documentation was not engaging and did not reflect the quality of online sustainability communications
- Lack of data management technologies and processes required to effectively monitor progress
“With 2020 targets looming on the horizon and Birkbeck’s current rate of carbon reduction predicted to fall short, despite making significant reductions to date, we sought Carbon Credentials for assistance. Acting on this need to revitalise our CMP and a shared understanding of the risks and opportunities, Carbon Credentials clarified a solid plan to help focus our efforts.
“Carbon Credentials provided the vital data service which addressed our previous Lack of data management technologies and processes, which now allows us to monitor our progress properly. However, it is Carbon Credentials expertise that ensures we receive ongoing maximum value, as the software solutions require dedicated resource to make them work effectively.”
During the CMP build process Carbon Credentials defined data management requirements to ensure CMP implementation was integrated with a robust data management plan. Requirements included the ability to monitor and measure individual projects effectively, and provide the CMP team with instant access to Birkbeck’s carbon performance.
Carbon Credentials implemented an online carbon and energy management portal that collated data for energy, water and waste. A reporting framework developed in collaboration with Birkbeck defines how carbon performance will be communicated to engage appropriate stakeholders and drive the programme.
By managing Birkbeck’s data management and reporting programme, Carbon Credentials is able to support the management of carbon impacts by communicating performance to those that can affect change
The data services provided by Carbon Credentials have enabled crucial progress updates which are clearly communicated in frequent reports. This has enabled the estate’s team and key decision makers to respond quickly.
CMP documentation was revitalised, properly showcasing Birkbeck’s approach to sustainability and carbon management and achieving a higher level of alignment with the institution’s strategic plans.
